Quick answer

Monitor an agent across usage, conversation outcomes, user feedback, knowledge quality, connected actions, and consumption. Establish a baseline, configure supported alerts, assign owners, and investigate whether the intended business outcome actually occurred.

The blue fox and cyan squirrel monitor agent usage, failures, and alerts.

Prerequisite knowledge
A published agent, its intended business outcomes, knowledge sources, connected actions, and access to relevant monitoring tools.

What you’ll learn

  • Review usage alongside resolution and user satisfaction.
  • Check connected actions and downstream outcomes separately from the agent response.
  • Investigate failed flows, stale knowledge, fallbacks, and abandoned sessions.
  • Configure supported alerts with an owner and response procedure.
  • Use monitoring evidence to improve the agent after release.

Before you start

Prerequisite knowledge
A published agent, its intended business outcomes, knowledge sources, connected actions, and access to relevant monitoring tools.

Day 91 of 365 Days of Copilot Studio looks at what happens after an agent goes live. Users may receive an answer while a connected action fails, encounter outdated knowledge, or abandon a conversation. Monitoring helps teams find these problems and improve the experience.

Following Day 90: Cost Optimization, this lesson covers usage, outcomes, integration reliability, knowledge, alerts, and business value. The PDF’s dashboards and figures are illustrative.

Start with the outcomes that matter

Define the business task and what success means before choosing metrics. For a support agent, that might be a correct answer or a successfully created request. Establish a baseline and review usage, answer quality, reliability, and consumption together. High activity alone does not prove that users are getting value.

Use the Copilot Studio Monitor page to explore available trends, outcomes, and component analytics. Metric definitions, availability, and reporting windows depend on the experience and configuration.

Watch usage, resolution, and satisfaction

  • Usage: Review session and activity trends to understand adoption and changes after releases. A conversation can contain more than one analytics session.
  • Resolution: Review resolved, escalated, abandoned, and unengaged outcomes in context. A resolved outcome can be confirmed by the user or inferred by the agent’s logic.
  • Satisfaction: Review available survey responses and feedback, keeping the number and representativeness of responses in mind.

Drill into repeated questions, fallback responses, and abandoned sessions to understand where users get stuck. Use feedback and sample reviews to supplement aggregate metrics; protect access to conversation data and follow your organization’s privacy and retention rules.

Monitor actions and connected flows

An agent may say it will update a document even when the downstream operation fails. Check the action result, connected flow run history, connection errors, and destination state rather than treating a conversational response as proof of completion. Track failures, delays, and recurring dependencies with an owner who can investigate.

Before retrying a failed write, check whether the destination already changed and whether the operation can be safely repeated. Separate technical run status from the business outcome the user expected.

Review knowledge quality

Sample answers and their sources for accuracy, relevance, and currency. Investigate unanswered questions, stale documents, missing content, and unsupported answers. Give knowledge owners a way to correct content and retest common questions after updates. See the data privacy lesson for source and conversation access considerations.

Connect monitoring layers

Use agent analytics for conversation patterns, flow and destination monitoring for integration outcomes, and operational telemetry for deeper diagnostics where supported. Copilot Studio can send telemetry to Application Insights; the available events and setup depend on the selected scope and configuration. Review cost and credit consumption alongside these signals.

Turn alerts into action

Choose actionable conditions based on the baseline, such as a rise in failed actions, unusual usage, or a sustained change in conversation outcomes. Configure alerts through tools that support the relevant signal and scenario; availability, latency, permissions, and licensing can vary. Test delivery and avoid implying that the PDF’s illustrative dashboard is an automatic built-in alert.

For each alert, document an owner, severity, investigation steps, escalation route, and expected response. Verify that the alert reaches the right person, investigate logs and affected business records, resolve the issue, and review whether the threshold needs adjustment.

Production monitoring checklist

  • Business outcomes, baselines, and review cadence are defined.
  • Usage, resolution, abandonment, and available feedback are reviewed together.
  • Connected actions and flows are checked for errors and actual destination outcomes.
  • Knowledge quality and unanswered questions are reviewed with content owners.
  • Consumption and relevant operational telemetry are monitored.
  • Supported alerts are tested and assigned to a response owner.
  • Monitoring data is protected and retained according to policy.
  • Findings lead to fixes, retesting, and follow-up.

Monitoring is an ongoing practice: after each meaningful change, compare the outcome with the baseline and continue reviewing what users experience.

Frequently asked questions

Does a resolved conversation prove the business task succeeded?

Not necessarily. A conversation outcome may be confirmed or inferred; check connected action results and the destination system for the actual business outcome.

Are usage and satisfaction enough to monitor an agent?

They are useful signals but do not cover every failure. Also review knowledge quality, action and flow failures, operational health, and consumption.

Are all monitoring and alert features available automatically?

No. Coverage and setup depend on the agent, environment, telemetry configuration, supported features, and licensing. Verify the actual data and alert path.

How should an alert be used?

Assign an owner, define the condition and response, test delivery, and investigate the underlying event. An alert is useful only when someone can act on it.
