Direct answer: Write your best processes down as Dataverse Business Skills — plain-language instructions with steps, inputs, and rules — and every agent connected through the Dataverse MCP server will discover and follow them automatically. Start with one repeatable process, govern it like documentation, and expand from measured wins.
Freshness note (October 2026): Business Skills arrived in public preview during 2026 alongside the Dataverse MCP server. Confirm current availability and controls before production adoption.
Why skills beat longer prompts
Prompts live inside one agent; skills live in the data platform every agent reads. The escalation path, the approval steps, the specialist-assignment rules — written once as a skill, they guide Copilot answers, Studio agents, and coding assistants identically. When the process changes, you update one skill instead of hunting prompts across agents.
Anatomy of a good skill
A strong skill names its trigger (when it applies), its inputs (what the agent must gather), its steps (in order, with decision points), its rules (what must never happen), and its definition of done (how success is recognized). Write it the way you would brief a careful new hire — concrete nouns, ordered steps, explicit exceptions.
Write, connect, verify
- Capture — draft the skill in plain language or upload the existing procedure; assign an owner and a review date.
- Connect — expose it through the Dataverse MCP server so entitled agents discover it automatically.
- Verify — run the process end-to-end through an agent, check outputs against the documented rules, and refine wording where the agent guessed.
- Govern — version changes, review on schedule, retire skills for retired processes.
Worked example: vendor escalation skill
Trigger: a high-priority vendor ticket sits unassigned for over four business hours. Inputs: ticket record, vendor contract with response-time terms, on-call rotation. Steps: confirm priority and elapsed time, identify the accountable specialist from the rotation, draft the escalation notice quoting the contract clause, assign and notify, log the escalation on the ticket. Rules: never reassign an already-escalated ticket without duty-manager approval; never expose contract pricing outside the operations group. Done: ticket assigned, notice sent, audit entry recorded. One page of plain language — executable by any connected agent.
Pair skills with the rest of the platform
Skills describe process; security roles decide access (security roles guide), environments decide lifecycle (environment strategy), and solutions carry it all between environments (production-ready architecture). An agent is only as trustworthy as the platform beneath it.

A natural-language capture of a process, policy, or domain practice — steps, inputs, and business rules — that agents connected to the Dataverse MCP server discover and follow automatically.
Who writes Business Skills?
Makers and process owners in plain language, or by uploading existing procedure documents — no code required to start.
Which agents can use a skill?
Any agent connected through the Dataverse MCP server, whether it runs in Copilot Studio, Microsoft 365 Copilot, or a compatible coding assistant — define once, apply everywhere.
How are skills governed?
With built-in versioning and controls: owners, review rhythms, and retirement, so tribal knowledge stays current instead of fossilizing.
Where should we start?
One repeatable high-value process with clear steps and measurable outcomes — for example vendor escalation, proposal approvals, or specialist assignment.
